Arsenal made a move for Josip Sutalo, but he is now one step away from joining Ajax in a deal which could be worth around £18.6 million.

That is according to a report from Calciomercato. It, which notes that the centre-back is set to sign a five-year contract with the Eredivisie side.

Josip Sutalo is attracting interest from a number of European heavyweights. Calciomercato. It reports that Arsenal have recently made a move to sign the 23-year-old Dinamo Zagreb star.

Arsenal target Sutalo now step away from Ajax move

The Gunners have been incredibly busy in this window. And they have strengthened their defensive ranks further, with Jurrien Timber joining from Ajax.

It would appear that it may now be the Dutchman’s former club who are set to secure his signature. Calciomercato. It reports that Sutalo is now step away from joining Ajax.

Sutalo has accepted the move to the club. And the Croatian is ready to sign a five-year contract. Ajax meanwhile, are looking set to pay €21.5 million after Dinamo had initially asked for €25 million.

Arsenal’s priority is now going to be moving players on. As reported by The Times, the Gunners have a net spend of around £500 million under Mikel Arteta. And they have already welcomed a number of signings in this window.

They look to be well-stocked at the back – and with players who can play across the backline. The likes of Timber, Ben White and Takehiro Tomiyasu can play in a number of roles.

So missing out on Sutalo is not necessarily the end of the world for the Gunners.

And with the defender joining Ajax, there is potentially scope for him to make another move in a couple of years should he kick on in the way the Dutch side hope.
