Arsenal pulled off masterstroke not signing Dani Ceballos, he's on his way out of Madrid again
Arsenal enjoyed a fruitful summer this year, as Edu and Mikel Arteta got to work on shaping the Gunners squad for the future with the help of some much-needed funds from the Kroenkes.
The Gunners signed the likes of Aaron Ramsdale, Albert Lokonga, Ben White, and Nuno Tavares to add a youthful zest to their side. They also moved the likes of Willian on, and tied down key players such as Emile Smith Rowe.
At times, Edu in particular, came in for criticism from the Arsenal fans. But one decision that surely can’t be called into question is the move to not sign Dani Ceballos from Real Madrid.
The Spaniard had spent night on two years in North London. And while he did ok at times, he hardly pulled up any trees.
Ceballos on his way again
Instead of signing Ceballos for a third time, Arsenal instead moved for his Madrid teammate, Martin Odegaard. That move looks like being a good one, with the Norwegian slotting back into things nicely.
For Ceballos, he’s enduring a bit of a nightmare. Reports suggest he is on his way back to Real Betis in January. He’s yet to appear for Los Blancos this term, highlighting the fact he was probably never quite at the level Madrid require. Or Arsenal, for that matter.
The Gunners, then, can look back on this one as a decision well made. Edu, of course, will be delighted with the course of action he and his transfer team took in the end.
While Ceballos struggles in Spain, the likes of Partey, Lokonga, and Odegaard continue to grow into top Premier League players. The Spanish midfielder had his chance to really take a shirt in north London but blew it.
But blowing it is not what can be said about the Gunners when it comes to the call to not bring Ceballos in permanently.
