‘Idiot’: Arsenal fans raging as Granit Xhaka tried to defend Tottenham performance

The Switzerland international gave away a needless penalty in Sunday’s draw with Spurs.

Arsenal midfielder Granit Xhaka didn’t really have a game to remember in Sunday’s battle with Tottenham Hotspur.

Although the North London-derby is typically a hotly-contested fixture the Switzerland international took things to a farcical level.

His stupid lunge on Son-Heung min allowed Tottenham to take a two-goal advantage, whilst his performance, on the whole, was poor.

Of course, Arsenal did fight back and claim a share of the spoils. Xhaka, however, was left to face the brunt of criticism from supporters.

The 26-year-old has now hit back at his critics.

Speaking to the Metro whilst on Switzerland duty, he said: “In the London derby, I think we had a good game, I made a mistake with the penalty, yeah, but if you see the game we could have won.

“We have a lot of chances, but this is football, nobody speaks about the chances, how many we missed, always they speak about the mistakes. That’s a part of football.”

His comments have hardly gone down too well with the Arsenal faithful.

They are tired of his below-par performances and some are keen for Arsenal to offload him if the opportunity to do so arises.

Xhaka signed from Borussia Monchengladbach for £30 million in 2016 (Sky Sports) and earns £100,000-a-week (Spotrac). He has made 137 appearances for the Gunners and has captained the side in three league games this season.

Following his latest comments though Arsenal fans are up in arms. Here is a selection of Tweets in the aftermath of Xhaka outing his critics:
