Emmanuel Frimpong urges Arsenal to sign Napoli star Kalidou Koulibaly

Former Arsenal midfielder Emmanuel Frimpong has called on his former club to sign Napoli defender Kalidou Koulibaly, in an interview with MetaRatings.

The Gunners have conceded 10 goals in six league games this season and there are still some concerns for Unai Emery in defence.

Frimpong played 16 games for Arsenal having risen through the academy ranks and he believes the defence is weaker than last season.

The man with one Ghana cap hasn’t been impressed by what he has seen from the Gunners and says better defenders are required.

He told MetaRatings: “David Luiz has been making mistakes and in my opinion, there’s little difference between Luiz and Mustafi; I would rather see Calum Chambers selected.

“They need to be signing better defenders, like Koulibaly, who can make a big impact on Arsenal’s team.”

Frimpong has also hinted that signing a defender in January will be the difference between them claiming a top-four finish.

He continued: “Yes. They need a Koulibaly! They need to improve the defence to challenge.”

Signing Koulibaly would prove tricky. According to Goal, the 28-year-old has a minimum release clause of £133 million.

His quality was telling in a recent Champions League game with Liverpool, however. He kept the reigning champions at bay with a string of fine blocks and headers, highlighting his robust style of defending.

TBR Verdict – Frimpong has a point, Arsenal still need defenders

Prior to his injury Arsenal fans remained unsure over Rob Holding. It is perhaps telling that despite signing Luiz in the summer, supporters are now overjoyed that the former Bolton man is closing in on full fitness.

Frimpong makes a very valid point that someone with the world-class ability of Koulibaly would improve Arsenal’s team considerably.

Luiz isn’t the man to grab the Gunners defence by the scruff of the neck and single-handedly lead the team towards the Champions League.

The Brazilian has played all but one of Arsenal’s league games and they are still conceding silly goals.

Emery would be wise to pursue another central defender in January and the Napoli man could be perfect for the Gunners.
