Arsenal forward Eddie Nketiah has admitted he’s got a long way to go if he’s wants to go in his career, after he asked whether he could be the next Harry Kane or Alan Shearer.

Nketiah, 21, became the highest ever goalscorer for England’s Under-21s side on Tuesday night, surpassing Premier League and Three Lions icon Shearer in the process.

The Gunners striker netted the winner against Turkey to ensure England’s qualification to next year’s Under-21s European Championships in a 2-1 victory.

He’s already a regular in the Arsenal first-team under manager Mikel Arteta, scoring two goals in his opening seven appearances of the season.

Nketiah has been asked about whether he could go on to emulate the likes of Kane and Shearer.

Shearer is an England great that finished his career as the highest goalscoring in Premier League history, while current England captain Kane is one of the best centre-forwards in the world right now.

Spurs talisman Kane, 27, has an incredible record of 32 goals in 48 senior caps for England and he was previously a big success for the nation’s youth teams.

“I’ve got to keep level-headed and I’m trying to best the best version of myself and do the best I can. I’ve still got a long way to go, it’s nice to achieve this [Under-21s goal record],” Nketiah told talkSPORT’s Ian Abrahams, as quoted by his official Instagram account.

“They’ve had brilliant careers and I’ve got a long way to get to their standard. All I can do is keep working and believe in my ability and hopefully I can get to where I want to get to.”

TBR’s View:

There is certainly a path to the England senior team in the future for Nketiah, especially if he continues to impress at the Emirates Stadium and earn regular game-time for the North London giants.

He’s got to keep his head down to try impress for his club and England senior manager Gareth Southgate will certainly be aware of his talent, as he’s helped bring through a wave of talented youngster to his group in recent times.

Unfortunately for plenty of English strikers it looks like they’ll have to sit behind Kane in the pecking order, but Nketiah is a rising star that is deadly in front of goal and has great goalscoring instincts.
