Arsenal fans were shocked by their xG vs Tottenham.

The Gunners comprehensively beat Spurs at The Emirates on Sunday.

Three first half goals within the space of just 22 minutes put the game to bed after just 34 minutes.

However, the xG didn’t match Arsenal’s dominance.

Arsenal only amassed an expected goals total of 1.49 over the course of the 90 minutes, compared to the 1.06 Tottenham managed (xG Philosophy).

Regardless of the stats, the result was an incredible one that the Gunners will relish.

Everyone on the pitch played a role and it’s a result that saw Arsenal rise above Spurs in the Premier League.

However, this was the first time in six Premier League games that Arsenal have overperformed their xG (Understat).

Going into this game they’d only managed two Premier League goals, so this was a huge outing for Mikel Arteta’s side.

On a day in which Thierry Henry watched on from the stands, this was a game that had everything.

This will provide the Gunners with a platform to kick-start their season.

Next up for Arsenal are back-to-back games against either side of the M23 derby.

First is a trip to Brighton before they host Crystal Palace and with two wins the Gunners can start a charge for the top four.

More performances like Sunday’s xG overperformance will certainly help.

Many of the fans were left baffled by the xG after the game.

Some, though, did point out how they stopped throwing men forward in the second half as they sat on a three goal lead.
