A number of Arsenal fans have slammed Unai Emery on Twitter after the Gunners boss admitted, in comments reported by Sky Sports, that he was interested in signing Fabinho before his move to Liverpool last summer.
Emery is coming under plenty of pressure at the Emirates. Results-wise, the Gunners have made an encouraging start to the season. However, some of their performances have been criticised, and the 1-0 defeat to Sheffield United on Monday saw Emery’s tenure scrutinised.
The Europa League has provided some respite so far. However, it appears that Emery has scored an own goal with his fans ahead of their latest clash on Thursday.
The Arsenal boss was asked about Nicolas Pepe’s struggles in North London. And in explaining how he is expecting the forward to come good, he made an admission about one Liverpool star.
“For example, in France I loved a lot Fabinho. He was in Monaco and I wanted to sign him for Paris Saint-Germain,” he said, as reported by Sky Sports. “When I arrived here, also his name was on the table to achieve to sign him, but he signed for Liverpool.
“The first six months he didn’t play, it was adaptation. But now he is amazing and I want the same with (Dani) Ceballos, with Pepe.”
The comments have prompted a significant backlash on social media. Some have slammed Emery as they feel that he has publicly admitted that Lucas Torreira was never his first choice target in that position.
Torreira is a popular player amongst the fans. And with Granit Xhaka continuing to struggle, the supporters were already scratching their heads wondering why Emery was not showing more faith in the Uruguayan.
They have also joked that Fabinho is probably fortunate he did not join Arsenal. The Brazilian has established himself as one of the world’s best holding midfielders at Anfield. But some Arsenal fans believe that Emery would be using him as a number 10 if he moved to the Emirates.
Here is how some of the Arsenal fans reacted to Emery’s comments…
He’d probs play Fabinho as a #10 anyways

Good management. Openly admitting a player seemingly low on confidence wasn’t his first choice

Why is he openly saying Torreira wasn’t his first choice?

He’d have played Fabinho as a number 10.
