Arsenal fans respond to Mat Ryan's Tweet, after his clean sheet for Australia on Thursday against Kuwait
Mat Ryan kept a clean sheet for Australia on Thursday night as the Socceroos eased past Kuwait in a World Cup qualifying clash. The goalkeeper, who spent the second half of last season on loan at Arsenal, posted on Twitter – and many Arsenal fans want Ryan signed.
Ryan, 29 clocked up his 59th cap for his country as Australia took on Kuwait. Goals from Matthew Leckie, Jackson Irvine and Ajdin Hrustic saw the Socceroos cruise to a 3-0 win – and make it five wins from five. They sit at the top of their World Cup qualifying group, five points above Kuwait.
But the Brighton goalkeeper was needed at times, pushing a decent effort round the post during the second half. Eventually, Ryan boasted a clean sheet and posted on Twitter after a solid performance from Graham Arnold’s side. It was his first Australia outing since November 2019.
Ryan, a boyhood Arsenal fan, joined the Gunners on loan in January from Brighton. He played three times, as he acted as Bernd Leno’s back-up. But many were impressed with his performances in those three outings – one of which he supplied an assist to Eddie Nketiah to score against Fulham.
Ryan has now returned to Brighton where he has 12 months remaining on his contract. But he is clearly keen on joining Arsenal permanently, telling Fox Sports he wants to rejoin The Gunners this summer – signing more than just a loan deal. Arsenal fans clearly want Ryan too, reacting to his Tweet.
