Arsenal boss Unai Emery is reportedly ready to trigger AS Roma defender Kostas Manolas’ £31 million release clause.
According to Il Messaggero, the Gunners manager wants to beef up his defence with the signing of the Greek international, who has been with the Italian giants for five years.
Manolas has also been linked with a move to Manchester United, but Arsenal appear to be in the driving seat at present.
The 27-year-old has made 206 appearances for the club so far and has Champions League experience.
He was a mainstay in the Roma starting XI this term up until he sustained an ankle injury. He made 35 appearances across all competitions.
Manolas, who has 39 caps for his country, is apparently seen as a potential fix by Arsenal for their leaky defence, which conceded a concerning 51 Premier League goals in 2018/19 – which was more than Wolverhampton Wanderers, Leicester City and Everton.
Arsenal fans react
Manolas may have a wealth of experience at the top level, but many Arsenal fans seemed against the idea of him joining the north London giants this summer:

Hes very error prone, just like Mustafi. Wouldn’t be an upgrade at all

Would rather have Umtiti over this fellow. We should spend big and get 1 quality CB and maybe gamble on some youth players up top.

This isn’t it Chief

Anyone who knows defensive play, knows he’s not much better than what we have in mustafi, rather go for a commanding CB. Even Dunk is a better choice, rather Maguire as well.
