Arsenal are reportedly closing in on a deal to sign Sporting Lisbon forward Tiago Tomas – and some of the club’s fans have reacted to the news on Twitter by questioning the thinking behind it.
According to the Sun, the Gunners are “close” to finalising a deal to sign the 18-year-old in the summer transfer window.
It its explained that the club’s technical director Edu has been in discussions with Sporting’s director of football Hugo Viana.
The report states that the teenager has a release clause worth £52million, but the Portuguese club may accept a transfer fee as low as £20million.
It is further details that Gunners manager Mikel Arteta was “impressed” when watching him recently.
Tomas, 18, is still a relatively unknown talent that is still finding his way at first-team level, but has made regular senior appearances during this campaign.
The Portuguese striker has scored five goals and supplied three assists in 25 appearances this season for Sporting.

A selection of Arsenal supporters on social media believe that reports of a deal for Tomas suggests that their current youngster Folarin Balogun will exit the Emirates Stadium.
The Mirror has claimed a number of clubs want to sign 19-year-old Balogun, whose contract expires in the summer, with Bayer Leverkusen prepared to make a “lucrative offer”.
He’s yet to sign a new deal with the North London club, albeit Gunners boss Mikel Arteta has confirmed he’s hopeful he can stay.
