Arsenal are ready to battle Paris Saint-Germain and Monaco for Southampton defender Cedric Soares, according to Portuguese outlet Diario de Noticias.
They report that the Portuguese international is going into the final year of his contract at St Mary’s, meaning that this summer represents their final chance to secure a decent fee for him.
At 27, Cedric has plenty left to give at Premier League level, but did spend the second part of last season out on loan at Inter Milan.
He has returned to the Saints, and gone to Austria with them on their pre-season tour, indicating that he could be back in the fold at the club.
And while some Gunners fans on Twitter were a bit underwhelmed, and perhaps do not see him as a potentially better option than Hector Bellerin, others feel that a backup right back is desperately needed.
Stephan Lichtsteiner has left the club and while Ainsley Maitland-Niles filled in last season, he is a midfielder by trade and really needs to get back to playing there.
It wasn’t a hugely excited reaction, but some supporters do feel that it might be a sensible swoop, which would especially be the case if Cedric’s contract situation means that a lower fee can be negotiated.

As a back up to bellerin id take Cedric , won’t cost to much , would move AMN to midfield . We desperately need a 2nd choice RB

Definitely a better back up option for Hector than Lichtsteiner was!
