England Under 21s took a hugely talented squad out to Italy for the European Championship, with high hopes of clinching the trophy.
But if 2017 and 2018 saw England make strides on the international stage at all age group levels, the period thereafter has seen stagnation.
And that continued for Aidy Boothroyd’s side, as they crashed out in the group stage, conceding nine goals and seeing opponents miss a further two penalties, and gathering just one point.
That solitary point came in last night’s 3-3 draw against Croatia, where the Young Lions took the lead three times, only for familiar frailties to display themselves at the back.

And after sitting out the first two matches – defeats to France and Romania – Reiss Nelson was handed a start last night and responded by opening the scoring from the penalty spot.
That got plenty of Arsenal fans on Twitter excited, as they want to see the teenager given regular gametime out wide next season, irrespective of who comes through the door during the transfer window.
Nelson certainly looks an exciting talent and Unai Emery could do a lot worse than giving Nelson an opportunity to prove himself – it could save him millions in the transfer market…
