Mikel Arteta has given a glowing verdict with comments about Arsenal defender Shkodran Mustafi – and some of the club’s supporters on Twitter have responded to claim he should be given a contract extension.
The 28-year-old has had some real low points so far during his Gunners career, but has come into favour recently under manager Arteta and looks more suited to a back three since a change in formation.
He’s an experienced centre-back that is playing some of his best football right now at the Emirates Stadium and he appears to have cut out the errors that have so often held him back.
His current deal with the north London club expires in summer 2021, but Arteta has possibly given a small indication in his latest comments that he wants to keep the defender beyond that.
“I’m really happy with him (Mustafi). You clearly can see the way he’s playing and how committed he is with everything we’re trying to do,” Arteta said, as quoted by Football.London.
“The level he has shown with his performances every three or four days has been really consistent and I’m really happy with him.
When asked directly if Mustafi should be given a contract extension, Arteta replied: “That’s something that the club has to address but he knows my opinion on that.”

A selection of Arsenal supporters have picked up on Arteta’s hint about Mustafi’s future and there are many who believe he’s shown enough in recent performances to suggest a new contract would make sense.
The £90,000-a-week (Spotrac) will need to finish the season strongly to prove that his recent form is not just a blip and it’s the perfect opportunity on Sunday to show he’s improved for the north London derby away to Tottenham.
