Arsenal fans react to Matt Macey’s Hibernian debut

A number of Arsenal fans have taken to Twitter to comment on Matt Macey’s display as the former Gunners goalkeeper made his debut for Hibernian on Monday.

Macey left the Emirates earlier this month after more than seven years on their books. In that time, he only managed to make two appearances for the first-team, spending much of his spell out on loan.

The goalkeeper situation has been a problem for Mikel Arteta for much of his tenure. Initially, the dilemma centred around whether Bernd Leno or Emi Martinez would be his number one for this season.

Martinez’s departure cleared up that debate. And following his move, it was Alex Runarsson who came in in the summer.

Unfortunately, Runarsson has not had the best spell so far. And he made a couple of major errors in the Carabao Cup tie with Manchester City last month.

That may have left some wondering whether Macey may be promoted to the number two position at Arsenal for the remaining months of his contract.

However, he has now moved on, with Hibs signing him for the rest of the season.

He was unable to keep a clean sheet on his debut as Jack Ross’ men drew 1-1 with Celtic. But he did manage to make a number of impressive saves, with the likes of David Turnbull, Ismaila Soro and Diego Laxalt testing him from range.

And the goal that did beat him was a moment of magic from Turnbull late on.

His performance seemed to impress a number of Arsenal fans who were looking on. And it seemingly left some convinced that he would indeed have been a better option to have on the bench than Runarsson for the coming months.
