A number of Arsenal fans have taken to Twitter to comment on William Saliba’s performance as the Gunners’ under-21s were thrashed 3-0 by AFC Wimbledon in the Papa John’s Trophy on Tuesday.

Saliba was named in a strong Arsenal lineup for the clash against the League One side. The likes of Sokratis Papastathopoulos and Gabriel Martinelli were also included.

Unfortunately, it proved to be a hugely disappointing night for Arsenal. They conceded three goals in the second-half. And they lost two men to red cards.

One of those red cards was shown to Saliba. And yet, it appears that plenty of Arsenal fans felt that the youngster had actually produced a very impressive display.

The 19-year-old was shown a second yellow for a challenge after slipping over. However, it appeared that the decision was incredibly contentious.

His studs were facing his opponent. But he won the ball and it is not an aggressive movement towards the ball as he is already on the ground.

‘First-team ASAP’

Despite the disappointment of the dismissal and the result, many suggested that Saliba looked a class act. In fact, some clearly still feel that he deserves an opportunity in the first-team in the near future.

He showed confidence and composure on the ball. And perhaps more encouragingly, he showed real intent when in possession. And it arguably says a lot that many are still praising him despite the result and red card.

Here is how some of the fans reacted to his display…
