Arsenal fans react on Twitter to superb Houssem Aouar assist

The last thing Arsenal fans probably needed to see amid all of the North London derby disappointment was reported summer target Houssem Aouar produce an outrageous assist for Lyon hours later.

Mikel Arteta’s men dominated possession on Sunday. They managed to put in a startling number of crosses. However, they could not produce the moment of quality they were crying out for as they looked to get back into the game.

Agonisingly for supporters, the performance was hardly an anomaly. They have scored just two goals in their last seven Premier League games. One of those goals has been from open play – and that was from centre-back Gabriel.

Changes need to be made. And Arsenal fans may be hoping that one of those changes involves Aouar amid links with an Emirates switch in the summer.

According to Football London, the Gunners were unwilling to meet his £46 million asking price. They were prepared to pay £35 million. And it is suggested that Lyon are aware that Arsenal remain interested heading into January.

Aouar could not therefore, have timed his latest moment of brilliance more perfectly. The 22-year-old contributed a superb assist in Lyon’s 3-1 win over Metz this weekend.

He received the ball on the edge of the box with his back to goal. And without looking, he knocked the ball first time with the outside of his boot into the path of Karl Toko Ekambi, who found the back of the net.

It was a stunning piece of skill for Aouar. And it prompted a strong reaction from Arsenal fans on social media…
