Arsenal fans react on Twitter to Patrick van Aanholt reports

A number of Arsenal fans have taken to Twitter to comment on reports from the Daily Mirror this weekend claiming that the Gunners want Patrick van Aanholt.

Mikel Arteta’s men look to be searching for a new left-back as the transfer deadline looms. Arsenal lack cover in that position with Cedric Soares acting as Kieran Tierney’s understudy.

And a surprise name appears to have come onto their radar in the final hours of the window. According to the Daily Mirror, Arsenal are keen on van Aanholt.

The 30-year-old is reportedly into the final six months of his contract with Crystal Palace. According to Spotrac, he is on £55,000-a-week.

It is claimed by the Mirror that Palace could sell four years after his £14 million move (fee reported by BBC Sport). So it will be interesting to see whether the two clubs are able to reach any sort of agreement in the near future.

The reports have attracted a mixed response on social media. Admittedly, there are plenty who are not interested in seeing van Aanholt arrive at the Emirates.

He has lost his place at Selhurst Park in recent times. And some fans are not convinced that he would be a worthwhile signing when they have options who can fill in as well as academy prospects knocking on the door.

However, there are others who believe that it could prove to be an incredibly smart piece of business. Arsenal were always going to struggle to sign a top player to provide competition for Tierney in this window.

But van Aanholt brings experience. And as he would not be a first-choice option, there is optimism that he could be a surprisingly good signing.
