Arsenal fans react on Twitter as Konstantinos Mavropanos plays in 5-1 win

A number of Arsenal fans have taken to Twitter to laud Konstantinos Mavropanos after the defender helped Stuttgart beat Borussia Dortmund 5-1 on Saturday.

Mavropanos was handed the chance to make his fourth league start of the season against Lucien Favre’s side. Dortmund had gone into the contest off the back of an inconsistent run of form. However, they were five points clear of their opponents before kick-off.

Remarkably, the game was poised at 1-1 at half-time. But the visitors scored four times after the break to stun Dortmund.

Mavropanos was taken off after 88 minutes. As shown by Whoscored.com, he managed five clearances and six interceptions. No other player on the pitch managed more than two interceptions during the game.

The 23-year-old has only made a handful of appearances for the Gunners since his £1.8 million move (fee reported by Sky Sports). And as things stand, he looks set to return to the Emirates next summer with plenty of competition for a place in the side.

‘Obvious partner for Gabriel’

But it is clear that several fans want Mavropanos to be given an opportunity upon his return. Other than Gabriel, none of Arsenal’s centre-backs have stamped their authority on their position this season.

That could open the door for someone not currently in Arteta’s plans. Some obviously want William Saliba to get a chance. But Mavropanos is also receiving a lot of support after his display in the dismantling of Dortmund.
