Barcelona and Valencia are keen on signing Arsenal defender Shkodran Mustafi during the January transfer window, according to Catalan outlet Sport.

The 29-year-old has found himself down the pecking order under Mikel Arteta and his contract expires next summer.

Mustafi arrived at the Emirates Stadium in 2016 fresh from winning the World Cup with Germany.

He has made 146 appearances during his time in North London, scoring nine goals and lifting the FA Cup twice.

More recently, however, he has found first-team football hard to come by.

The summer arrival of Gabriel Magalhaes has limited his opportunities, with Rob Holding and David Luiz also showing their capabilities this season.

Mustafi was in favour under Arteta last season and starting the current campaign injured didn’t help him.

The time to move on could be in January, with Arsenal viewing it as one last chance to cash in on Mustafi.

After a mixed bag of results to start with, Arteta might want to sign another player or two once the window reopens.

In order to do that, a departure is likely to be needed and getting Mustafi’s £90,000-a-week budget off the wage bill would help.

Arsenal fans have been reacting on Twitter to news of the interest in him and here is what they’ve been saying.
