Le Havre midfielder Pape Gueye has confirmed in a statement issued to French newspaper L’Equipe that he will not be joining Watford this summer despite the Hornets announcing Gueye’s signing – and Arsenal fans have responded.

Back in February, Jeunes Footeux claimed Arsenal were the most likely club to complete the summer signing of 21-year-old Gueye – who has clocked up 40 senior appearances for Ligue 2 side Le Havre.

However, it appeared Arsenal had missed out in their attempt to sign the central midfielder, after Premier League side Watford announced a deal that would see left-footed Gueye join the Hornets at the end of his contract.

Over a month later, Gueye has made it clear in a statement with L’Equipe that he has not signed with Watford and will now cut ties with the Hornets altogether. He also spoke about his future, stating it is still uncertain.

Indeed, the France Under-19 international is out of contract at the end of the month and clubs can approach the Frenchman to sign him for nothing. Arsenal could return to try and sign Gueye, following his statement.

Amid a long-winded statement, Gueye said – as per L’Equipe: “For me, the future is still uncertain. I want to denounce the circumstances which surrounded the signature of a contract with Watford and what I consider to be irregularities directly with their representatives.  I take note of the end of all contractual link with Watford. “

Arsenal fans have responded on Twitter to the news that Gueye is still available and no longer a new signing at Watford, and many believe Mikel Arteta should look to bring him to the Emirates – again.
