Phil Jones has claimed that he could have joined Arsenal back in the summer of 2011 before opting to join Sir Alex Ferguson at Manchester United – and Gunners fans are relieved that he chose Old Trafford over the Emirates.

Jones, 28, joined Manchester United nine years ago from Blackburn Rovers after clocking up 40 senior appearances as a teenager. He has gone on to play 225 times for Manchester United, though he has fallen out of favour this season.

The 27-time England international – who joined United for £16million – has managed just two Premier League appearances this season. The form of Harry Maguire has seen Jones fall down the pecking order, playing just eight times in all competitions.

In a long-winded interview with MUTV, the versatile Jones spoke of his move to Manchester United and how Sir Alex convinced him to choose Old Trafford over the likes of Arsenal, Everton, Liverpool, Chelsea and Manchester City.

“I could have gone to a host of clubs: [Manchester] City, Chelsea, Liverpool, Arsenal and Everton,” Jones told MUTV. “He [Ferguson] was the last person I’d spoke to and I remember walking out and saying: ‘I want to sign for Man United’.”

Arsenal do have plenty of options at centre-back, but are likely to be in the market for another central defender this summer. David Luiz, Sokratis and Shkodran Mustafi have all come under fire for their performances this season.

The Mirror claim both West Ham and Newcastle want Jones, who is rated at £12million. But Arsenal fans reacted to Jones’ comments with the general consensus being that they dodged a bullet when Jones chose United.
