Arsenal fans react as journalist claims Gunners want Premier League right-back

Arsenal are reportedly revisiting interest in Brighton defender Tariq Lamptey ahead of the January window. The Brighton star is fit again and is once again impressing under Graham Potter – and Arsenal fans want him signed.

Lamptey, 21, has caught the eye for Brighton since joining the club from Chelsea in January 2020. He has only played 31 times since that move, with a long-term hamstring injury ruling him out from December until September.

The right-back has now fully recovered, starting seven of Brighton’s last eight Premier League matches. Arsenal, meanwhile, have numerous options on the right of their defence – Takehiro Tomiyasu shining at right-back.

The summer signing from Bologna has established himself as first choice – even earning praise from Lee Dixon earlier this week. The Gunners do have plenty of cover, even loaning out Hector Bellerin to Real Betis in the summer.

Cedric Soares and Calum Chambers remain at the club and can operate on the right of the defence, as can England star Ainsley Maitland-Niles. But Duncan Castles has told his podcast that Arsenal are looking at London-born Lamptey.

“Arsenal, who had an interest in Lamptey when he emerged on the scene, before that difficult injury, they are looking again to sign him and exploring the parameters of the deal,” Castles told The Transfer Window Podcast.

What are Arsenal fans saying about Brighton star Lamptey?

The Gunners are well-stocked at right-back. But next summer, those options could dramatically reduce. Chambers is out of contract, Cedric could go and Maitland-Niles is said to be on the verge of a move to Roma.

With Rob Holding and Pablo Mari struggling for game time, they could leave – and Tomiyasu might offer cover at centre-back. He plays in the middle for Japan. So, Lamptey might be crucial – Arsenal fans have had their say.
