Ian Wright has stated he remains hopeful that Arsenal can complete a move to sign Lyon midfielder Houssem Aouar in the coming months after missing out in the summer – and Gunners fans have responded on Twitter.

Aouar, 22, threw his name onto the shortlists of Europe’s biggest clubs in the summer after shining in Ligue 1 and in the Champions League with Lyon. He had a hand in 19 goals – scoring 10 times and creating nine more.

Arsenal were heavily linked with Aouar, with the Metro claiming Lyon valued the new France international at £50million. The Gunners chose to spend the transfer fees on Thomas Partey instead this summer, though Aouar could remain a target.

Arsenal legend Wright told Premier League Productions – as per the Metro – that he hopes Arsenal go back in for Aouar, who has already scored two goals this season. Whether the Gunners can afford a move until at least next summer remains to be seen.

“They still need more, he’s [Thomas Partey] not the main one and that’s why Arsenal went for Houssem Aouar as well,” Wright said. “I’m hoping they can still get him at some stage but Partey is a massive improvement on what Arsenal have got.”

Arsenal do boast Joe Willock and Dani Ceballos but neither have shown on a consistent basis that they can connect the midfield to the attack. Mesut Ozil, meanwhile, remains frozen out and has been left out of the club’s 25-man squad.

Arsenal supporters have responded on Twitter to Wright’s comments and many are in agreement that they hope to complete a move for Aouar and bring him to north London in the coming months.
