Emi Martinez has claimed he is “open to anything” when it comes to his Arsenal future and claimed he could even return to Argentine side Independiente in just two years – and Gunners fans have reacted on Twitter.
Martinez, 27, joined Arsenal way back in 2012 form Independiente but has since managed just 25 appearances for The Gunners in all competitions. Under both Unai Emery and Mikel Arteta this season, he has played 11 times.
He remains second choice to Bernd Leno but now the uncapped Argentine is entering an important stage of his career. He may want to finally make a name for himself and be considered as a first-choice goalkeeper somewhere else.
That is unlikely to happen at The Emirates, with Leno head and shoulders above Martinez in terms of quality and calibre. Asked if he could leave Arsenal ahead of the summer, Martinez opened the door to a move – and said he could return to his first club.
“We will see. When Agüero returns, I would think about it. It is the club he [Aguero] loves. The truth is that this can never be ruled out, I am open to everything, especially in England,” Martinez told Argentine outlet TNT Sports.
With two years remaining on his contract, Arsenal are under no pressure to sell the goalkeeper – but given the loyalty Martinez has shown despite a lack of game time, The Gunners are unlikely to stand in his way should offers come in.
Arsenal supporters reacted on Twitter to the news that Martinez could consider a move in the coming months, and many are willing to see the back of the Arsene Wenger signing this summer. One fan compared him to Jeremie Aliadiere.
