Carlos Vela got his 2020 MLS campaign up and running on Sunday evening with a delightful chip, which proved enough to earn all three points for Los Angeles FC against David Beckham’s Inter Miami – and Arsenal fans have reacted on Twitter.

The hype prior to the match surrounded Beckham’s new Miami side, a project which the England and Manchester United legend had has in place for quite some time – ever since signing a contract with LA Galaxy in 2007.

That contract included the chance to start a new franchise, or club, for a discounted price. 13 years later, that side made their debut against Vela’s Los Angeles – but it ended in a 1-0 defeat for Beckham and manager Diego Alonso.

Vela, now 31, took his tally to 56 goals in just 70 games for LAFC as he cut inside from the right flank before dinking a stupendous effort from 18 yards over Miami goalkeeper Luis Robles – who had otherwise been in terrific form.

Miami did have plenty of chances, with ex-Celtic star Lewis Morgan, Mexico international Rodolfo Pizarro and striker Robbie Robinson all going close. But it was ex-Arsenal star Vela’s stunning effort that secured all three points.

Vela scored 11 goals in 64 appearances for Arsenal after joining the academy from Chivas in 2006 – before eventually leaving for Real Sociedad in the summer of 2012. Gunners fans reacted to his goal on Twitter, with one posting “Class is permanent”.
