Arsenal fans react as Cagigao claims Gunners tried to sign Alphonso Davies

Arsenal’s former chief scout Francis Cagigao has claimed in an interview with CBS Sports that the Gunners tried to sign Bayern Munich superstar Alphonso Davies before the Canadian ace joined the German champions – and Arsenal fans have reacted.

Cagigao left his role as Arsenal’s chief scout earlier this season, after working for much of Arsene Wenger’s time in charge at Arsenal. The Spaniard – who was an Arsenal youth player – oversaw many big-name signings, for big fees.

He was also instrumental in many additions of a younger nature – more recently the signing of Gabriel Martinelli from Brazilian side Ituano. He is yet to find himself a new job, but played a part in the additions of Gabriel and Thomas Partey.

Now, Cagigao has made a big claim. He has told CBS Sports in an interview that he tried to lure Alphonso Davies to the Emirates – before the 17-time Canada international moved to Bayern in the summer of 2018 from Vancouver Whitecaps.

Though CBS do not carry quotes on Davies, the piece claims Cagigao revealed Arsenal’s interest: “He [Cagigao] reveals Arsenal had been weighing up a move for Alphonso Davies before Bayern Munich beat them to the signature of the Canadian,”

Davies has since become one of the best players in European football, following his £16million (iNews) move from the MLS side. Since replacing David Alaba on the left side of Bayern’s defence, he has clocked up 57 games – having a hand in 14 goals.

Arsenal supporters have reacted on Twitter to the news that they could have signed Davies before Bayern swooped in, and as you would understand, the overriding feeling is one of frustration.
