Arsenal’s search for a combative defensive midfielder was protracted and generally unsuccessful under Arsene Wenger.
That meant that securing one was at the very top of Unai Emery’s to-do list when he was appointed to replace the legendary Frenchman.
Emery went out and got a goalkeeper, defensive midfielder and a centre-half, which were three positions which troubled Wenger in a recruitment drive which included Lucas Torreira.
The Uruguayan had to be patient at the start of the season but has been impressive since he was handed his opportunity and was given the man of the match award in the Gunners’ hard-fought 2-1 win at Bournemouth yesterday.

It was a frantic encounter between two sides who love to attack, which puts a great deal of stress on the holding players as they seek to stem the tide in and end to end match.
So it was a mark of how well Torreira played that he was handed the man of the match award in a game where so many attacking players performed impressively and he is not short of admirers among his new fanbase…
