Arsenal took on West Ham United this evening in what proved to be a hard-fought fixture against the Hammers.
In the end, Arsenal battled to a 2-1 win, Eddie Nketiah scoring from the bench after Michail Antonio had previously equalised from Alexandre Lacazette’s opener.
Arsenal’s display never reached the levels of their opening day win over Fulham, or their recent successes in the FA Cup and Community Shield under the increasingly impressive management of Mikel Arteta.
So for some fans, the main reaction online after and during the game did not refer to the players who did feature for Arsenal, but one that didn’t.
Namely, they were discussing Scottish international Kieran Tierney.
The former Celtic star picked up a hip injury in the warm-up and this game went on to prove just how important Tierney has become to the Arsenal first-team.
Not only was his defensive ability missing, but his ability to transition play from defence to attack far outweighs that of his replacement Sead Kolasinac, who struggled to have a genuine impact on the game.
There is no doubt now as to just how important Tierney is for this Arsenal team and fans were quick to comment on that fact on Twitter.
Tierney’s absence really messing us up.

Difference between Kolasinac and Tierney: Tierney gets back to defend, Kolasinac doesn’t. #ARSWHU

Is this life without Kieran Tierney?

No Tierney, no party. #AFC

Hard to overstate what a massive loss Kieran Tierney was to Arsenal tonight.
It’s like somebody unplugged the left hand side of the team without him.

Tierney must really be some player. Everyone forgets how to play without him

This is how important Tierney has become for arsenal.

Tierney getting ruled out is a HUGE blow. No Tierney means ball progression from deeper areas is going to be really difficult. I get the premise for a left footer playing there, but much rather play Gabriel-Luiz-Holding over Kolasinac….
