Arsenal started their Champions League campaign with a victory, beating Athletic Club 2-0 in Bilbao.

Mikel Arteta picked up a big win on Saturday afternoon, as Arsenal beat Nottingham Forest 3-0 at the Emirates Stadium.

The attention turned to European action on Tuesday night, as Arsenal opened their Champions League campaign against Athletic Club.

The Gunners toiled away in Bilbao before substitute Gabriel Martinelli made an immediate impact, racing clear to score the winner for Arsenal.

Leandro Trossard set up Martinelli’s opener and then found the net himself, handing Arsenal a 2-0 victory.

Arsenal fans on Cristhian Mosquera display v Athletic Club

Arsenal missed Martin Odegaard’s creativity in midfield and looked to be stumbling to a 0-0 draw before Arteta’s substitutions changed the game.

Before Martinelli and Trossard came off the bench to score, few Arsenal players really caught the eye in a difficult display.

Defender Cristhian Mosquera was the pick of the bunch, though, as the centre-back again produced a brilliant display.

Arsenal fans took to social media to rave about Mosquera, suggesting that he is ‘freakishly good’ and ‘absolutely incredible’.

Others praised his pace and even made comparisons to William Saliba, the man he has replaced in the heart of Arsenal’s back line.

Some called Mosquera a ‘top baller’ and a ‘cheat code’, questioning just how Arsenal were able to sign such a talented player in such a cheap deal.

Here are some of the best reactions from Arsenal fans on X after Mosquera’s display against Athletic Club.

Cristhian Mosquera looks like an incredible bargain for Arsenal

Arsenal signed Mosquera from Valencia over the summer, paying just £13million to land the Spanish defender, according to Sky Sports.

Gunners insiders quickly saw Mosquera’s potential, and they will not be surprised by his displays this season.

Mosquera has stepped up in place of Saliba and didn’t even look overawed by his introduction against Liverpool.

Now shining in the Champions League, Mosquera would already be worth a lot, lot more than the fee Arsenal paid for him in July.

While other Premier League clubs throw money at defensive additions, Arsenal appear to have struck gold with Mosquera – and he is giving Arteta a real decision to make for when Saliba returns.
