There has been a marked contrast between Arsenal’s home and away form this season and so far the former has been enough to stop the latter derailing their hopes of progress in the Europa League.
That meant that the Gunners needed a good result in the first leg of their semi-final clash against Valencia at the Emirates Stadium last night.
It didn’t start well, when Mouctar Diakhaby putt he visitors ahead after just 11 minutes, but a double from Alexandre Lacazette had Arsenal in front by the interval.
2-1 would have been a decent lead to take to Spain, but with Arsenal’s away form, being within 1-0 second leg defeat of elimination would have been precarious at the same time.

So Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s stoppage time goal – to make it 3-1 – could well be absolutely vital in terms of giving Arsenal enough of a buffer next Thursday.
The supporters who took to Twitter after the game certainly thought so, hailing Aubameyang – who Spotrac claim earns £200,000 a week – for his late contribution and hoping that can prove the difference, not least because the Europa League now likely represents their best opportunity to qualify for next season’s Champions League.
