Arsenal finished pre-season with a 2-1 loss against Barcelona but some important lessons have been learned in the United States. Unai Emery has been running the rule over his squad and Joe Willock is one of the standout players.
Willock started against Barcelona in central midfield alongside Granit Xhaka. He came up against Ivan Rakitic and Frenkie de Jong in the Barcelona midfield and the teenager held his own.
The 19-year-old has played 17 competitive games for the Arsenal first-team – mostly in cup competitions – and he has scored three goals. But his pre-season performances have given Emery food for thought.
The breakthrough season for Willock?

Willock has only played four times in the Premier League but he could add to those appearances this season. Emery has been impressed enough by Willock to start him ahead of other midfielders against Barcelona.
Arsenal fans have also been thoroughly impressed by their homegrown star. The England U20 midfielder will now be hoping to take his pre-season form into the 2019/20 season and help Arsenal compete for a top-four finish.
Here are some tweets from Arsenal fans discussing Willock’s performance against Barcelona and his pre-season form.
