Arsenal’s Under-23 side came from behind twice to beat Derby County in Premier League 2’s top tier on Tuesday night, with Folarin Balogun getting his name on the score sheet – but Gunners fans were full of praise for defender Zane Monlouis.

Steve Bould watched on as Arsenal conceded the first goal just before half-time, Joel Lopez committing a foul and Derby striker Cameron Cresswell duly obliging from the penalty spot. But Arsenal were ready to fight and equalised soon after the restart.

Kido Taylor-Hart showed some nice footwook before firing into the bottom corner. Derby – who are managed at senior level by Wayne Rooney – then went 2-1 ahead through Josh Shonibare but a well-worked goal down the right brought about parity.

Tim Akinola won the ball back and fed 17-year-old Monlouis, who clocked up just his sixth outing for the 23’s. He found Trae Coyle and the number seven’s excellent run to the byline picked out Balogun – who netted amid reports of a new contract.

Arsenal’s perserverance eventually paid off as they ran out 3-2 winners, thanks to an own goal from Coyle’s cross. The win is crucial as Arsenal look to avoid the drop, and Gunners fans applauded the versatile Monlouis on Twitter after the match.
