Arsenal fans discuss what Eddie Nketiah and Leeds star did at full-time on Tuesday

Eddie Nketiah and Kalvin Phillips were seen sharing a brief embrace at full-time as Arsenal beat Leeds. The Gunners earned a place in the Carabao Cup quarter-finals with a comfortable 2-0 win over struggling Leeds at The Emirates. Arsenal fans discussed what happened at full-time, on Twitter.

Leeds fans watched on as two of their former loanees, in Ben White and Nketiah, started against them on Tuesday night. White was brilliant for Leeds during 2019-20, the year in which the Whites regained a place in the Premier League. Nketiah struggled for game time at Elland Road.

Both contributed to a comfortable win against a injury-stricken Leeds. Marcelo Bielsa’s men were without Luke Ayling, Patrick Bamford, Raphinha, Robin Koch and Junior Firpo for the trip to North London – and it showed. Phillips clocked up 90 minutes in the middle of the park for Leeds.

After a tight affair in the first 45, Arsenal took control in the second half and looked far more threatening. Substitute Calum Chambers came on to open the scoring, just seconds into his appearance – before Nketiah chipped over Illan Meslier before finishing. Just about.

A solid win for Arsenal as Arteta stretches his side’s unbeaten run to eight games in all competitions – after losing 5-0 to Manchester City. Arsenal now await their potential opponents in the last eight, with five fixtures still to be played this evening – including the likes of Tottenham and Manchester City.

After the match, Phillips and Nketiah shared a quick hug and chat as both sets of players walked off the pitch. Of course, many Arsenal fans would have been cheering on Leeds star Phillips during the summer as he represented England at Euro 2020. Clips emerged online.

What do Arsenal fans think as Leeds star Phillips and Nketiah embrace?

Arsenal could do with a midfielder. Thomas Partey and Granit Xhaka are probably first choice, when it comes to Mikel Arteta picking his double pivot. But Xhaka has been much-criticised during his Arsenal stint, and the cover behind him is hardly encouraging for the Gunners gaffer.

Mo Elneny is set to leave the club on a free, with his contract expiring in June. Matteo Guendouzi and Lucas Torreira are out on loan. But both loan deals include permanent fees – that are likely to be activated. Albert Sambi Lokonga is still learning his trade in the Premier League.

A new midfielder might be needed next summer; Phillips certainly fits with the kind of signings Arsenal have made so far. Young, English, and at a side beneath the Gunners. A different approach, to signing elder more-proven, high-earning players from bigger clubs – Willian for example.

Having seen Nketiah and Phillips share a moment on the pitch, many Arsenal fans took to Twitter. They think the Leeds and England star would be the ideal midfield addition. However, he would cost about £100million, according to Gunners legend Perry Groves.
