Mario Gotze has confirmed to German newspaper Bild that he will be leaving Borussia Dortmund at the end of the season on a free transfer – and Arsenal fans have reacted on Twitter, with some hoping their club consider a move.
Gotze, 27, is out of contract this summer. The 2014 World Cup final goalscorer has not had his contract renewd despite costing Dortmund £22million (Guardian) in the summer of 2016 – which saw the German side buy him back from Bayern Munich.
However, a metabolic condition which is believed to be the reason for Gotze’s numerous pelvis and upper leg injuries, has stunted the growth of his career. Indeed, the 61-time Germany international is now simply a fringe player at Dortmund.
This season, the former Bayern ace only managed 19 appearances for Dortmund. Lucien Favre prefers the likes of Jadon Sancho, Thorgan Hazard and Marco Reus – and that has seen Gotze tell SportBild that he is to depart on a free this summer.

He told SportBild: “After intensive considerations, I decided to make a change in the sporting planning of my career. I deliberately took the necessary time for this step because it is an important step for me to set the course for the future.”
Arsenal are expected to be after a new attacking midfielder this summer, with Mesut Ozil’s future in doubt. Emile Smith-Rowe is impressing on loan at Huddersfield but it might be too soon – while Joe Willock was hit and miss this campaign.
Arsenal fans reacted to the news that Gotze will leave Dortmund for nothing this summer, and some would consider a move – while others believe it is best to look at other targets in the coming months.
