Arsenal fans discuss Julian Draxler’s performance for PSG on Wednesday night

Julian Draxler impressed on Wednesday night as Mauricio Pochettino’s Paris Saint-Germain produced a sparkling performance to beat Bayern Munich 3-2 away from home in the Champions League – and Arsenal fans have raved about the German star.

Draxler, 27, started for PSG on Wednesday night in an attacking side that also boasted Neymar, Kylian Mbappe and Angel Di Maria. The German champions could not prevent the French title holders from securing a win away from home at the Allianz.

Bayern, who were without Robert Lewandowski, could not cope with PSG’s counter-attacking prowess as Kylian Mbappe scored two delightful goals – his second a brilliant finish at the near post to win the match. Neymar was superb throughout.

The Brazilian created both of PSG’s first two goals, supplying Mbappe with an expert pass for the Frenchman’s first goal before his delightful first-time cross was pinpoint – allowing Brazilian teammate Marquinihos to finish like a striker.

Draxler was excellent throughout. Not only did he have a disallowed goal in the first half, but the German worked hard for his side – offering a defensive blanket of solidity on the flanks, but plenty going forward in a free-flowing attack too.

As per WhoScored, he boasted better passing success rates than Di Maria and Neymar on the night. All this, despite being in the midst of a tricky contract situation that currently will see him leave PSG on a free transfer this summer.

Arsenal have long been linked with a move for the Germany World Cup winner. The Mirror claimed as recently as January that Arsenal were keeping tabs on the former Wolfsburg and Schalke star while his contract remains up in the air – and it still does.

The Gunners currently boast Emile Smith-Rowe and Martin Odegaard in those positions – with Mesut Ozil leaving the club in January to join the team he supported throughout his childhood, in the form of Turkish club Fenerbahce.

Odegaard is impressing while on loan from Real Madrid and Arsenal are likely to try and do everything within their power to keep the Norwegian in North London. But realistically, they may have to admit defeat in their pursuit of Odegaard.

The better he continues to play, the more chance Real and Zinedine Zidane will want to keep him. Not only that, but other clubs – who might have Champions League football on offer – will want to sign him. Arsenal simply cannot compete.

So, a cheaper alternative may have to be brought to the club and Draxler fits the bill. Though it feels like he has been around for years, Draxler is still only 27 and offers enormous quality, experience and versatility. He can play deep, out wide, or as a 10.

Arsenal fans watched on on Wednesday night as Bayern failed to stop Draxler’s PSG and many still think he would be a good addition to Mikel Arteta’s side – especially given the midfielder is available for nothing.
