Arsenal fans discuss Jesus Corona’s display for Porto
Porto dramatically knocked Juventus out of the Champions League on Tuesday night – and some Arsenal fans on Twitter watching the game were left wowed by the performance of Jesus Corona for the victors.
Porto booked their spot in the Champions League quarter-finals with a memorable win against the Italian giants last night, as they progressed via the away goal rule in extra time.
Despite the fact they were down to 10 men early in the second half, Portuguese side Porto took the game the distance and goalscorer Sergio Oliveira was the match-winner for them late on with a long-range free kick.
It finished 3-2 on the night to Juventus, but their opponents went through on the away goal rule over a 4-4 aggregate scoreline.
There were some ridiculous displays from several Porto players. 38-year-old centre-back Pepe rolled back the years with a heroic defensive effort, Oliveira scored two goals, plus Corona received a lot of credit on social media.
A selection of Arsenal supporters on Twitter felt that one individual really stood out.
Corona, who played 118 minutes for Porto before a late substitution, was someone that caught the eye for his stunning work-rate during the European showdown.
All of Porto’s 10-men put in an incredible shift off the ball with their backs against the wall defensively, which is why they thoroughly deserved to beat Juventus.
Left-winger Corona tracked back extremely well and tucked in to help his full-back. The 28-year-old did the dirty work defensively, but looked a real threat on the counter-attack too and showed off some beautiful moments of individual skill in possession.
He is a 45-time capped Mexico international with such a low centre of gravity and is a great dribbler with close control, something which bamboozled the opposition at times.
Corona has three goals and 11 assists in 38 games across all competitions this season.
If Arsenal were in need of a wide player next season, the dazzling fleet-footed winger would be a brilliant target for them and it’s easy to imagine him lighting up the Emirates Stadium, with similarities perhaps to ex-Gunners ace Alexis Sanchez.
But it’s not a position that Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta should be focusing on strengthening.
He’s got so many forward players with the likes of Bukayo Saka, Pierre-Emerick Auabameyang, Nicolas Pepe, Emile Smith Rowe, Willian and Gabriel Martinelli all capable of playing out wide within his squad.
The Champions League is a competition that Arsenal will be desperate to get back into themselves, but have no hope to do so without a bit more strength in both midfield and defensive positions.
They have the Europa League knockouts to focus on this season and perhaps that’s the club’s best route of getting into next year’s Champions League, as domestically they’ve been poor.
A Champions League night like on Tuesday is exactly the ammunition the Arsenal group need to get the North London club back competing on the elite stage.
Despite the fact Corona has been with Porto since 2015 and there has been no transfer links with Arsenal, some Gunners fans couldn’t help admire his midweek European display.
Here are some Arsenal fans waxing lyrical about Corona:
