Arsenal fans delighted as club finally listens to their wish but there’s a ‘ridiculous’ catch

Arsenal are playing some impeccable football at the moment, but it’s a new kit reveal off the pitch that has got the fans buzzing today.

Mikel Arteta’s long-term project finally appears to be paying dividends, with Arsenal dominating domestically and in the Champions League.

A huge 4-0 win over Atletico Madrid in midweek had Diego Simeone branding Arsenal the toughest opponent he’s faced this season, and was seen as a real signal of intent for the Gunners.

Supporters are naturally excited about what the future holds now, but they’ve taken some time to reflect on the past thanks to Adidas and Arsenal’s latest nostalgic kit drop.

Arsenal retro kit sparks positive response, but it’s too expensive

On Thursday, Adidas posted on Twitter/X to share that they’ll be selling a collection featuring the iconic Arsenal home shirt from 1992-94.

The shirt, which features a thick, old-school V-neck collar, centrally placed badge, and vibrant, geometric design sleeves will stir up memories of Arsenal’s famous FA Cup and League Cup double of 1992/93 and their UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup triumph in 1994.

Reacting to the reveal, fans described the shirt as “slick,” “so cold,” and “the perfect throwback”. One supporter even said: “I’ve waited ages for this drop, what a shirt!”

Another fan was delighted, writing, “The year, the memories, the kit, the nostalgia that goes with it all.” But, they also raised a valid concern, adding: “The price is ridiculous.”

The shirt retails at a whopping £90, prompting some supporters to say, “Are you having a laugh?” and “Killing us with these prices.” Another simply added: “The price got me feeling dizzy.”

Something has to be done about the cost of football kits

I’m going to sound like an old man here, but I remember when a football shirt would cost maybe £30 or £40. Admittedly, that was back in the early 2000s, but the rise in prices for football merchandise in recent years has been shocking.

No matter how nice a shirt is, or how special it may be in terms of this retro collection, no football fan should ever have to pay almost £100 for a jersey alone.

Poll: How much would you pay for a football shirt?

This inflation in prices is most damning when it comes to kids’ kits. Looking at the Arsenal collection as an example, fans would have to pay £40 for a baby kit, £50 for a kit for children ages four to eight, and a massive £90 to kit out any child older than that.

When you consider how much fans pay to attend games, it’s really not fair that they are then asked to stump up £90 for a vintage shirt, too.

With counterfeit kits flooding the market, something has got to give. These big brands will soon find that they are completely pricing fans out of buying kits at all, at least from official sources.
