Arsenal put out a reasonably strong side in an attempt to avoid a shock defeat against BATE last night in Belarus but it was to no avail as they went down 1-0.
The Gunners should still be able to turn the tie around in the second leg at the Emirates Stadium but that doesn’t soften the blow of a defeat against a side that they should be beating with some still left in the tank.
The Europa League is not the European competition the Gunners want to play in but unless their league form improves, it’s where they will be next season.
Performances like last night’s do nothing to add to the case that Unai Emery is overseeing progress in his attempt to improve the weaknesses Arsene Wenger left behind.

But it doesn’t help when the Frenchman left behind players like Shkodran Mustafi, who have international experience but look bereft of confidence and leadership skills at the heart of a defence that was leaky for far too long under Wenger.
The German got the nod last night but put in another nervous display, giving the ball away at will and failing to command his backline in a testing atmosphere.
Arsenal fans are getting fed up of it now…
