Arsenal defender Sokratis has been quoted by the London Evening Standard as saying that Alexandre Lacazette is a “goal machine” can can step up in the absence of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang – but Gunners fans have ridiculed his comments.
Aubameyang – who remains Arsenal’s top scorer after netting his 16th goal of the season on Saturday – was sent off for a straight red card after a horrible-looking challenge on Crystal Palace’s Max Meyer. VAR overturned the original yellow to a red.
It sees the Gunners skipper ruled out for the next three games, which are two crucial Premier League matches against Sheffield United and Chelsea and then a tough FA Cup fourth-round outing against Bournemouth away from home.
But Gunners defender Sokratis has backed Lacazette to shine in Aubameyang’s absence, describing him as a “goal machine” despite Lacazette netting just five Premier League goals in 15 games for the north London side this season.
“He’s a goal machine. In some games, from the outside, you can’t see what he can do or maybe he is a little bit struggling. Auba is a very important player. He’s the captain of the team, but now is the time that also the other players step up and show quality.
“Laca on Saturday was against two players every time and when you play the ball to him it’s very difficult to do the first control and the second because all the other defenders they are strong. Laca is coming better and better. He’s very important.”
Indeed, Lacazette has hardly looked the player he did in his first two seasons at the club after joining from Lyon for £52million (Telegraph) in 2017. He scored 36 goals in 88 games, but has only netted six in 19 league and cup outings this term.
Arsenal fans, who are becoming increasingly disgruntled with Lacazette’s lack of form, could not believe Sokratis’ comments that described the Frenchman as a goal machine.
I don’t know about that one chief
