Arsenal fans becoming fed up with Sokratis despite FA Cup win over Leeds

Arsenal scraped a 1-0 win in the FA Cup third round over Championship side Leeds United on Monday evening thanks to Reiss Nelson’s second-half goal – but Gunners fans are unimpressed with defender Sokratis on Twitter.

It was a tale of two halves as Leeds blew their Premier League opponents away with a stunning first-half performance. Marcelo Bielsa’s men played with a much higher intenstity, dominating possession and territory. They should have led at the break.

Patrick Bamford hit the bar, while Emi Martinez made some stunning saves to deny Jack Harrison and Gjanni Alioski. In the second half, it was clear Mikel Arteta had been angry during the half-time break.

Arsenal came out roaring, matching Leeds’ fight and pushing the Championship side back into their half. On his debut, French youngster Illan Meslier made some terrific saves but he was unlucky for the goal as Nelson bundled home from close range.

Sokratis, 31, was used on the right side of a back three but with Nicolas Pepe joining the attack – the Greek defender was often seen on the right flank, more of a right-back. The £92k-a-week man (Spotrac) was rinsed by Alioski, especially in the first 45.

Arsenal fans reacted to Sokratis’ display on Twitter, and many were frustrated with the ex-Borussia Dortmund star’s outing – though they cannot understand why Mikel Arteta used him at right-back. One fan claimed he always “looks so uncomfortable.”
