Arsenal eyeing Pedro Porro transfer months after Manchester City exit

Arsenal have entered the race to sign Pedro Porro, with O Jogo in Portugal (via Sport Witness) reporting that Mikel Arteta is an admirer of the Sporting right-back.

Porro may well be on the move before the January transfer window closes. He has been outstanding for Ruben Amorim’s men this season.

It had appeared that his most likely move in the Premier League may well be to Tottenham. Reports from Record on Wednesday claimed that Spurs are the only side to register an official interest in the 23-year-old.

But Spurs do not have a clean run to his signature. According to O Jogo, Arsenal are also in the running to sign the Spaniard. Sporting do not plan to let him go for anything less than €45 million (£39.8 million). A bid of that amount would trigger a release clause in Porro’s contract.

It is something of a surprise to see Arsenal in the mix for Porro. A right-back does not appear to be a priority for the Gunners, with Ben White and Takehiro Tomiyasu available. Meanwhile, Cedric Soares remains at the Emirates.

White has been a revelation this season. And Tomiyasu was extremely impressive when he was fit during his first campaign in North London.

Obviously, both men provide cover at centre-back. So Arteta may well feel that the additional depth would be welcome, particularly if they are going to be back in the Champions League next season.

Porro is a player Arteta will have been aware of for some time. He was at Manchester City when the Premier League champions signed him in 2019.

Porro did not play for City before leaving permanently in 2022. But they would have been monitoring his development while he was out on loan. And that may have brought him onto Arteta’s radar.

Perhaps they may now look snatch him from Spurs’ grasp.
