Arsenal eyeing £18m forward with ‘proven Premier League quality’

Arsenal have reportedly set their sights on Newcastle United’s Callum Wilson this month.

The Gunners have been rumoured to be on the lookout for attacking reinforcements in the January transfer window.

However, due to FFP constraints, Arsenal aren’t able to spend huge sums of money to bolster their attacking ranks this month.

Over the past few days, speculation has begun doing the rounds linking the Gunners with Wilson.

The Evening Standard has claimed that the £18million-rated England striker’s availability has alerted the likes of Arsenal.

Now, Ben Jacobs has provided an update on the links between Wilson, the Gunners and several other Premier League clubs.

The CBS journalist, writing on GiveMeSport, also reckons the 31-year-old would be a “relatively cheap and experienced” option for Arsenal and co.

“Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester United are all alerted to this situation,” said Jacobs.

“Wilson might provide a relatively cheap and experienced striker option with proven Premier League quality.

“Nobody has made a bid yet, but it wouldn’t surprise me at all if a Premier League club tries their luck.

“We know that Atletico Madrid have been interested in Wilson during this window, but they were put off by the wages, which were not feasible at their end.

“The wages would not be a problem for Arsenal, Chelsea or Manchester United, so it is one to watch.”

Pros and cons for Arsenal to weigh up about potential Callum Wilson move

Wilson is a great striker who has shown he has what it takes to score goals in the Premier League.

With 86 top-flight goals over the years, his reported availability is certainly something for Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta to think about.

At the same time, Wilson’s injury issues are a concern. The Newcastle ace has already missed 11 games in all competitions due to injury this season, including the last two in the league.

In addition, he turns 32 next month. With all things considered, it remains to be seen whether Arsenal would be willing to spend £18million on him this month.
