Arsenal have been linked with Boca Juniors midfielder Ezequiel Fernandez in recent days.

El Crack Deportivo recently claimed that the Gunners are among the clubs interested in signing the 21-year-old this month.

As well as Arsenal, the likes of Benfica, Inter Milan, Sevilla and Liverpool have apparently set their sights on Fernandez.

The Gunners could do with bolstering their midfield ranks this year. If not in January, then certainly in the summer transfer window.

Thomas Partey’s injury issues are getting concerning. The jury remains out on Fabio Vieira. And Albert Sambi Lokonga is out on loan and also faces an uncertain future.

Meanwhile, Fernandez has been going from strength to strength at Boca. It looks like a big move across the pond beckons.

Better yet for Arsenal, the ECD report claims that Boca want just €15million (£13million) for Fernandez.

Arsenal target Ezequiel Fernandez earns Alexis Mac Allister seal of approval

Should the Gunners manage to get their hands on the Argentine destroyer, they’d be signing a player with the Alexis Mac Allister seal of approval.

A year ago, the Argentina international was playing for Brighton. He had also not long lifted the World Cup with the Albiceleste in Qatar.

Speaking to TyC Sports, Mac Allister sung Fernandez’s praises and recommended him to Brighton.

“If you ask me a little more about my style, there is a player that I really like and that is Equi Fernandez,” he said.

“He is a player who has all the conditions to reach Europe one day. And I hope that can happen to him.

“He’s a player that I like a lot, he understands the game a lot. He is always prepared to receive the ball, he plays with both legs, he can play as a five, as an inside player.

“He is a player who has certain very good conditions and, if Brighton asked me, I would say his name.”

Arsenal fans – and maybe even the hierarchy – will no doubt appreciate Mac Allister’s praise of Fernandez.

As one of the Premier League’s top midfielders and a World Cup winner, him recommending a player to Brighton – a club with one of the best scouting setups in the league – speaks volumes about the target’s quality.

Can Arsenal look to take advantage and secure a deal for one of South America’s top defensive midfield talents this year? Certainly a space worth watching.
