Arsenal are reportedly set to beat the likes of FC Barcelona to one of the star players at this summer’s Euros in Germany.
The north London side have seemingly taken great inspiration from the tournament when it comes to their top transfer targets, with Arsenal close to signing Bologna defender and Italy star Riccardo Calafiori.
With Spain winger Nico Williams also believed to be on Arsenal’s radar, the Gunners have clearly been taking note of Euro 2024 and which players are performing best, with a number of top performers linked with moves to Mikel Arteta’s side.
And it now appears that Arsenal could be set to beat Barcelona to one such player.

Arsenal now in the driving seat to sign Spain star Mikel Merino
According to Sport, Arsenal are the clear favourites to sign Spain star and Real Sociedad midfielder Mikel Merino, with the report stating that Barcelona simply aren’t in the position to sign the Euro 2024 winner this summer.
Lauded by Kieran Tierney as a ‘world-class’ player, Merino seems like a dream fit for Arsenal this summer as the Gunners look to add a midfielder that can compliment the likes of Declan Rice and Martin Odegaard.
And after this update, optimism should be high amongst supporters that a deal for the 28-year-old could now be completed, with Merino seemingly keen on a return to the Premier League some years after leaving Newcastle United.
Indeed, Merino showed at the Euros why he is as coveted as he now is, and for Arsenal, beating Barcelona to the Spanish superstar would be quite the achievement this summer.

Merino can take Arsenal’s midfield to a whole new level
Although Merino isn’t the midfield signing most Arsenal fans would have predicted at the start of the summer, there’s no denying that the Sociedad star is an ideal fit for Arteta and what the Basque coach wants to do next season.
A midfielder who is in the prime of his career and could be signed for as cheaply as £20m, there’s a lot to like about Merino’s move to Arsenal, and it’s one that could take the north London side to a whole new level.
After an incredible summer, Merino has more than deserved a move to one of Europe’s elite, and Arsenal could be the perfect place for the 28-year-old to implement his talents in one of the most exciting teams in world football.
