Arsenal have decided that Eddie Nketiah will remain at the Emirates Stadium for the remainder of the 2019/20 campaign.
BBC Sport have reported that the striker who was expected to return to the Championship on loan, will now be part of Mikel Arteta’s squad.
Nketiah was on loan at Leeds United for the first half of the season, scoring five times for the Whites.
He only started two games in the Championship, however, with Arsenal unsatisfied with his game time.
Sheffield Wednesday, Bristol City and Nottingham Forest were the three clubs who Arsenal selected for Nketiah to hold talks with.
After discussions with the trio and Arteta, however, the England under-21 international will now fight for a place at Arsenal.
The 20-year-old has 19 appearances for the Gunners and will now look to add to his tally during the second half of this season.
This decision couldn’t have come at a better time. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang will start a three-match ban this weekend following his sending off against Crystal Palace.
TBR View – Wise move from Arsenal could pay dividends
Leeds United will be delighted that Nketiah isn’t about to join one of their three promotion rivals.
Arsenal, on the other hand, will be delighted to have their squad bolstered with a player who they see as a future first-team regular.
The chance to get used to Arteta’s methods ahead of challenging for a starting spot next season will be ideal.
If he can weigh-in with a few goals between now and the end of the campaign it will put him in good shape.
With Leeds not handing him much game time during the first half of the season, it did seem a gamble to risk the same happening again with another loan.
If Arteta has got this right it could prove to be a masterstroke. He will surely have plenty of chances up his sleeve for the youngster and that can only bode well.
