Real Madrid are said to be interested signing Moussa Diaby, in what could prove another bitter blow for Arsenal and Mikel Arteta.

AS reports that Madrid have expressed their interest in signing Diaby from Bayer Leverkusen, who are said to be seeking a fee in the region of £40m for the flying winger.

Madrid’s interest comes a year after it was claimed Arsenal had held talks over a potential move for Diaby. Of course, the Gunners never followed up that apparent interest and instead signed the likes of Thomas Partey and Gabriel Magalhaes.

But with Madrid now interested, could Arsenal be made to pay for their hesitancy last summer? It certainly looks that way, with funds said to be tight for the Gunners heading into the summer.

Diaby would be perfect for Arsenal

While the Gunners do have a lot of exciting players in attacking areas, some of their squad are still inconsistent and can, at times, flatter to decieve.

Nicolas Pepe is a prime example of that, while Pierre-Emerick Aubamayang has also failed to fire for most of the season. Diaby, then, who plays predominantly down the left, would be the ideal signing for Mikel Arteta.

He’s also got end product. Sure, he’s notched just three times in the Bundesliga this term, but he has nine goals overall and has also assisted a further 12, which is more than impressive.

Diaby, after another 12 months of excellent performances, seems to have added to his value. It begs the question, then, if Arsenal should have ramped up their interest last summer instead of stalling.

Time will, of course, tell with Diaby. But with Madrid now firmly in the running, any hope Arsenal might have had of rekindling their past interest has taken a big dent with the Spanish giants now on the scene.
