Arsenal could now block £24m player from leaving; Mikel Arteta wants him around all season

Arsenal goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale has been one of the big talking points of the entire season this time around.

The Gunners’ decision to sign David Raya has caused plenty of debate among fans and pundits. Raya is effectively Arsenal’s number one and a number of reports have suggested Ramsdale could seek a move away.

£24m signing Ramsdale was key last season after displacing Bernd Leno as number one. But he’s now getting a taste of his own medicine it seems and could be forced to look for a move elsewhere.

However, according to journalist Ben Jacobs, Arsenal do not want to lose Ramsdale and if Mikel Arteta gets his way, he won’t be going anywhere.

Arsenal to have final say on Aaron Ramsdale future

Speaking for GiveMeSport, Jacobs has revealed that the Gunners actually want Ramsdale to stick around due to his quality.

“I’m also told that if Arsenal have their way, they would still like to keep him until the end of the season for depth, and because, despite Raya being the number one, they just don’t see a great deal between the two goalkeepers. So, they believe that Ramsdale has all the qualities to play and step in when needed, whether that’s a congested fixture calendar, an injury, or a drop in form to Raya. So, Arteta doesn’t want to lose Ramsdale, but players will always have their say, too. The longer it goes on where Ramsdale is sitting on the bench, the less happy he will be and the more likely it will be that other clubs come calling,” Jacobs said.

A big call coming from everyone

There are so many variables at play here that it makes this such a hard one for both Arsenal and Ramsdale to consider.

For a start, the Gunners are top and Ramsdale might not want to leave when his team have a very realistic chance of winning the Premier League.

However, there is also the notion of needing to play regularly and not sitting around while Raya plays every week. With a Euros in the summer, Ramsdale will not want to put his place under threat and he might see playing games as being key to ensuring his spot.

But even then, nothing is guaranteed. If Ramsdale leaves and plays poorly somewhere, does that put him in even more trouble when it comes to England?

It’s a tricky situation, for sure, and one Ramsdale and Arsenal need to make sure they get bang on.
