Unai Emery is hopeful that Arsenal duo Granit Xhaka and Laurent Koscielny will be fit to face Napoli in the Europa League quarter-finals tonight, according to James Olley of the Evening Standard.
Olley tweeted that both Xhaka and Koscielny trained ahead of the first leg against Carlo Ancelotti’s side in a competition that could yet come to represent Arsenal’s best chance of qualification for next season’s Champions League and one in which Emery had an impressive record with Sevilla.
And he also relayed what Emery said when asked whether that means the duo can play tonight, “We are going to assess tomorrow. They are improving. They trained today with us but I prefer to wait for the last moment to decide that.”
That would offer Arsenal an increased sturdiness against a side who are capable of intricate attacking play and rapid counter attacks, as well as the reintroduction of some of Emery’s biggest and best leaders.
Of course, both men may yet not be risked, but it’s a positive for the Gunners that both men are approaching a return, with the business end of the Premier League season drawing in, as well as that sustained assault on Europe’s secondary competition.
Both will hope to have a big part to play in the closing weeks of the campaign, and Emery will hope that can start tonight by gaining a first-leg advantage against the Italians.
