Arsenal are being linked with a move for Borussia Dortmund midfielder Julian Weigl.
As reported by German publication Sport Bild, Sven Mislintat, who is head of recruitment for the Gunners, is pushing to make the transfer happen.
Mislintat, of course, previously worked for Dortmund before joining Arsenal last year.
So far he has successfully prised Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Sokratis away from the Bundesliga outfit.
And it would seem Mislintat is ready to raid his former club once again with a move for Weigl – but would this one be worthwhile?
A hindrance to Xhaka?
It’s an interesting link, and a move that doesn’t make complete sense.
Supposedly Weigl is being viewed as a replacement for Aaron Ramsey, who is set to leave on a free at the end of the season.
The pair are two completely different players, with Weigl more comparable to Granit Xhaka.
The German, who has made just three appearances for Dortmund this season, is a holding midfielder of similar physical stature to Xhaka.
Arsenal getting him in could have a negative impact on Xhaka, who has improved a lot this season under Unai Emery.
The £30 million signing from Borussia Monchengladbach (Sky Sports) has looked a much better player with Lucas Torreira playing alongside him, and could potentially regress if Weigl came in.
The Switzerland international appears to finally be on his way to justifying his price tag under Unai Emery – perhaps it would be foolish to do something that would directly affect his progress.
Weigl would apparently cost in the region of £68 million, making this potential deal quite unlikely – the Gunners would certainly be looking to negotiate such a fee right down.
