After completing a move for Riccardo Calafiori at the end of last month, Arsenal have failed to swiftly follow the deal with the arrival of Mikel Merino.
Arsenal’s deal for Merino has stalled, and there are now fears that negotiations could stretch until the end of the month, perhaps even to Deadline Day.
Real Sociedad have made it very clear during negotiations with Liverpool regarding Martin Zubimendi that they will fight to keep their stars, even if Merino’s case may be different with just one-year left on his contract.
There’s evidently a lot of work for Edu and Mikel Arteta to do, with the club also planning to add a new forward late this summer.
And although talk of signing Bruno Guimaraes from Newcastle has subsided in recent weeks and months, in-the-know Arsenal source Team News and Ticks have just shared a very interesting update.

Arsenal wanted Guimaraes earlier in the summer, but reportedly weren’t willing to pay his release clause.
And although the Newcastle man has now insisted that he’s content staying at St James’ Park, TNATS believes that may not necessarily be the case.
Arsenal’s Mikel Merino deal may be stalling because of Bruno Guimaraes interest
Firstly, the update suggests that Guimaraes’ would be willing to leave Newcastle this summer, despite all of his words in recent interviews saying otherwise.
And to that end, the update says that Brazilian ‘superstar’ would choose Arsenal over Manchester City if it came to it.
TNATS has been very firm in saying that the Gunners are making progress with a deal for Merino in the last week or so, but then shared a theory that may be the reason why a deal is being delayed.
According to the update, Arsenal may not be pulling the trigger on Merino’s transfer because they believe they may get the opportunity to sign Guimaraes instead.

Newcastle are still struggling with PSR which is being widely reported, and TNATS thinks this could present an opportunity for Arsenal.
That being said, if this information is accurate, one would think that Arsenal may still need to table a bid around the £100m mark for Bruno, which may be beyond the club right now.
Arteta recently said Arsenal wouldn’t break their transfer record this summer, stating that fans shouldn’t expect a Declan Rice type signing.
But with this latest update, perhaps all hope isn’t lost just yet.
